Sweet Nothing
by Juliet Funt
It’s been a hard year.
Almost everyone has had to buckle down, conserve, work harder, and fight the fear of a lifestyle that might never be the same. And now 2009 is over. We sit before a New Year with a clean slate, a fresh date and the tiny optimistic murmurs from the news folks that we may be on the upswing at last. Many are gearing up to hit 2010 running and make up for lost time, lost income and stalled progress.
I am putting in a vote to pause before you do.
This newsletter will contain not a single tip, tool or tactic. There will be not even one suggestion of a way to better yourself or your business. There will be nothing to bookmark, or practice. There will be no recommendation of which you may be tempted to make a mental note. And for gosh sakes, if any resolutions are percolating in your mind, I ask you to stave them off for a short while.
My wish for you this week is to savor a few days of idle time. Enjoy as much nothing as you can handle. I would love to see each and every one of you a wander through the joys and gifts before you to really taste of them a bit before you start trying to make anything -- your life, your income, your business, your body, your relationships or your year -- better.

If there is something that calls out to be organized, crossed off a list or completed, try ignoring it and see how long you can hold out. |
 |
Smile with a little humor at the pile of dishes and the bloated in-box and just for a short, short time walk away and do something of pleasure. |
 |
Don’t Twitter, blog, Facebook or link yourself in to anything new just for today. |
 |
Take your gaze and turn it towards all that is already. Stare deeply at the beauty of your children and for once, let them have all of you they want. |
 |
Daydream about every way that, even under the extraordinary pressure of this year, you have found moments to be serene and optimistic. |
 |
Pat yourself on the back for each smile that was a little work to create, but was of service to others. |
 |
Wander though your house and see items of timelessness and memory that remind you what you do your life for. Go slowly in this process. |
 |
And for every bread-winner out there of either gender, from all of us bread-receivers, remember that although stuff and money have their allure, at the end of the day what makes us deeply happy is YOU -- having you with us when you are light, undistracted and giving us your full attention. That is what we crave. |
We all hope this year will be easier, and that our lives and businesses will bloom effortlessly back into full flower before the next time the ball falls. So go get ‘em! But first, I send you a little breath, a little appreciation, and just a touch of nothing.
Happy, Happy New Year!
