The Life You Touch May be Your Own
by Juliet Funt

As the daughter of Allen Funt, of the Candid Camera Show, the question I am most frequently asked is, “What was it like to be Allen Funt’s daughter?” I never know quite how to answer; as he was the only father I have ever had and thus defies comparison.  The second most frequent is, “Were you paranoid as a child?" This is an odd but valid question considering my father's occupation.  The answer is “No,” because the realization that I was or could be observed at any time rarely entered my mind.

As the daughter of the most famous benign voyeur in America, self-consciousness would have seemed warranted, but I have discovered that the public nature of my family's life was not unique. The truth is that no private life is truly private.  Our conduct, whether or not it is consciously directed towards others, influences, teaches and guides the world around us. The weight of our choices is great because others watch the movie of our lives. And the degree to which we acknowledge our power in this regard, is the degree to which we can maximize it.

Urbanologists summarize all human interaction with the term “Social Process.”  But there is a unique category within the Social Process model, “Anonymous Social Process” (A.S.P.) defined as the interpersonal impact we have on people we never meet.  It is an invisible thread weaving us together, but many never know it exists.

Anonymous Social Process awareness is an essential addition to any personal development larder. We only need to start, as with any muscle we target for growth and toning…to exercise. So without further ado…allow me to start you off...

30 Anonymous Social Process Opportunities

Parenting Corner: Tarry Time

Magda Gerber is a child development genius who started a movement called RIE. The acronym stands for Resources for Infant Educators which is not so inspiring but the teachings of her school of thought are brilliant and create families with very independent, curious and vital children. Her concept of Tarry Time has been great for our family. It is defined as the gap between when an adult initiates a question, suggestion or request to a child and the response. Many young people and especially very young ones take a painfully long time to seem like they have heard us but if we allow them to arrive in their own time to the response, we benefit from not stamping out their engagement and authenticity. Hang back and let the Tarry Time go by. It may feel like the waiting will kill you- but it won’t.

Meeting Planner’s Corner: White Space Breakout

As strange as it might feel, schedule a few breakout sessions for your next conference as White Space problem solving events. You will need a facilitator in each room and a topic for the session such as Payroll, Communication, Difficult People etc., but there need be no session leader or content to be delivered. Allow session participants to learn from the wisdom of each other as they problem solve one by one through the places they are stuck. In addition to solving lots and lots of issues, this exercise is a wonderful example of the power of reaching out to one’s peers to problem solve.

Baking Tip: The Virtual Kitchen

At this time of year I love to open all of my old cookbooks and look through the baking recipes especially, of course, for the Christmas Cookies. BUT…the truth is that I hardly ever cook from those books anymore because I am so in love with on-line recipe sites where I can read reviews from other cooks about the recipe before I try it. Invariably there are tips that come in very handy on everything from changing oven temperatures to adding more ingredients to presentation ideas. My favorite is www.epicurious.com  Check it out!!
